My name is Dr. Jo-Ann Cohn, and I am a Licensed Psychologist. I am licensed to practice psychology in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and in the other 41 states that participate in PSYPACT. All of the states that participate in PSYPACT are listed above.

In my practice I serve women 30 and over who have been diagnosed late in life with ADHD . A formal diagnosis is not needed to work with me. Any woman who has researched the subject for herself and would like to explore the possibility of having undiagnosed ADHD is welcome.

My work goes well beyond tips or trendy “ADHD hacks.” I provide psychotherapy that helps you understand ADHD in the context of your emotions, relationships, self-esteem, history, work, identity, personality development and everyday functioning.

Who I work with

In my practice I serve women 30 and over who have been diagnosed late in life with ADHD. A formal diagnosis is not needed to work with me. Any woman who has researched the subject for herself and would like to explore the possibility of having undiagnosed ADHD is welcome. I work with women aged 30 to 80 and even over 80. I can also work with men diagnosed late in life with ADHD.

No two women with ADHD have the same exact combination of symptoms or needs. I customize each client’s treatment based on her struggles, hopes and needs.

This practice may be a good fit if you want to:

  • Navigate life with more confidence and ease and live with less shame, avoidance, anxiety and self-doubt.
  • Understand how and why you have ADHD.
  • Understand how your ADHD symptoms and traits became intertwined from an early age with your attachment, relational and personality development.
  • Let go of years of shame and self-blame.
  • Grieve lost career opportunities, lost relationships, missed time with family and friendships that never flourished.
  • Feel good about yourself, celebrate your strengths, stop isolating yourself, achieve your full potential and engage more confidently in the world.
It can be deeply validating when a late diagnosis of ADHD confirms that there’s a reason for the combination of struggles and difficulties you’ve had all your life. There’s a feeling of relief that comes from understanding that your brain processes information in different ways.

If you’re a woman 30 or over diagnosed recently with ADHD and you want help navigating life with more confidence and ease and living with less shame, avoidance, anxiety, and self-doubt, I’m the right therapist for you.

If you want to understand how and why you have ADHD, as well as how your ADHD symptoms and traits became intertwined from an early age with your attachment, relational, and personality development, I’m the right therapist for you.

What therapy with me is like

In my work with women diagnosed late in life with ADHD I blend techniques from Supportive Psychotherapy; Person-Centered Therapy; Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT); Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Attachment Theory; Psychoeducation; and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. All of my work is Trauma-Informed.

I’m a therapist who is active in sessions because I have a passion for educating my clients to help them understand ADHD and themselves better.

Emotional exploration

I’ll help you explore and embrace feelings including relief, grief, frustration, anger, sadness and much more.

Education and understanding

We look at ADHD in depth and connect it with many different areas of your life, relationships and functioning.

Coping and change

Therapy includes learning new coping skills, evaluating the health of the relationships in your life and developing new thought habits.

I am warm, nonjudgemental and I use humor when appropriate in the therapy process.

I’m not just a passive listener. I’m not just a “nice” therapist who went to a training about ADHD and now has compassion for people who have that diagnosis.

I have the lived experience of being neurodivergent and a great depth of knowledge and clinical experience to draw from in helping my clients. The time we work together will be well spent.

I provide therapy that goes in depth and connects lots of areas of your life and your functioning. I’ll help you to explore and embrace feelings including relief, grief, frustration, anger, sadness, and much more.

I am not the kind of therapist who just gives you trendy “hacks” and a pep talk and sends you on your way each week.

Therapy with me involves a healing blend of emotional exploration, education about ADHD, learning new coping skills, evaluating the health of the relationships in your life and developing new thought habits.

The overall result is that you will gain a new perspective on your strengths and your value, you’ll learn to ditch self-sabotaging and self-defeating thoughts and behaviors, and you’ll master strategies that will help you tackle life and work tasks better than before.

The therapy I do with my clients is informed by two guiding stars: education and support. The journey isn’t always easy, but it is always worth it.

Making sense of a late ADHD diagnosis

It can be deeply validating when a late diagnosis of ADHD confirms that there’s a reason for the combination of struggles and difficulties you’ve had all your life.

If you want a therapist who can help you let go of years of shame and self-blame; to grieve lost career opportunities, lost relationships, missed time with family, and friendships that never flourished, I can help you.

If you want to feel good about yourself, celebrate your strengths, stop isolating yourself, achieve your full potential and engage more confidently in the world, I’d be excited to help you.

The strengths I see in women with ADHD

I think that women with ADHD are some of the smartest, most sensitive, creative, intuitive, strong, warm, caring women on the planet. We struggle with deadlines and organization, but we are passionate and idealistic.

We may fall behind on paperwork, but we will take the lead on issues like fairness and justice, even for people we don’t even know. It’s in our nature to empathize with those who are misunderstood, undervalued, or disrespected, and that empathy runs deep.

We are hard on ourselves and prone to anxious rumination, but we’re also capable of finding joy in the smallest, strangest things around us. We think in unique, surprising ways, which makes us fun to be around, if a bit exhausting at times!

No two women with ADHD have the same exact combination of symptoms or needs. I customize each client’s treatment based on her struggles, hopes and needs.
